Trust and Autonomy

Growing Trust and Autonomy in Your Team

Your team’s performance can determine your path. Since that’s the case, a lot of managers tend to micromanage their teams, thinking they have greater control over the outcome. That’s not actually true. Micromanagement kills innovation, drive and trust.

The way to succeed is to get your team to do the right things done at the right time. To get them to do that, you need to give them the autonomy they need to get the job done. Tell them exactly what you expect, and them let them go. Evaluate what they’re doing as they go and coach them if they need some direction along the way. When they come through for you, show them you appreciate it. Buy them pizza for lunch or bagels in the morning on occasion (maybe not the healthiest choice, but you get what I mean). Once you actually function as a team, things will go much smoother and be a lot less stressful.
